Cloud Computing Basics

Today everyone is shifting towards cloud, and even trending courses are mostly related to cloud. This is the reason why students are also learning and doing certifications of cloud computing. But the question is what this cloud is, everyone talks about?

Technology is getting connected and moving towards the cloud infrastructure. The technology paradigm has shifted gradually from conventional software models to the internet & that too gradually achieved momentum over the last 15 years.

So what is cloud computing? Cloud Computation is a category of outsourcing of applications and programs. It is an on-demand release of computation power, storage with databases, applications that are developed (either horizontal or vertical), and various additional Information Technology resources through the cloud services policy with the help of internet and the most promising feature of pay-as-you-go worth – which means the amount of feature, infrastructure and all the above demands required or you want to use, you can pay for that amount only, no additional financing is required. With the use of cloud computing, customers have the capability to access software and applications from different parts of the world, provided the customer is connected to the infrastructure/service provider through active internet. In cloud computing technology, the computer program resides & is hosted by a third party provider which is set up in cloud (server where all applications and associated data resides). This gives additional benefit that cloud customers don’t have to be concerned regarding things like storage & power and can simply use the features and benefits provided by cloud companies. Upgrades to the software are also invisible to the user.

Let’s now talk more about its capability. Cloud computation offers a straightforward approach of accessing servers, storage benefits, use of databases and wide set of programs and services through Internet. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is one of the most popular cloud service provider which is maintaining the network based connected hardware essential to run different applications and services which users are getting through web applications.

Cloud computing can be classified based on their nature into 4 different categories –

  • Private cloud

  • Public cloud

  • Hybrid cloud

  • Community cloud

Moreover cloud computing service providers can provide services which has diverse classification based on the customer/user’s requirement:

  1. IaaS (Infrastructure-as-a-Service)

  2. PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service)

  3. SaaS (Software-as-a-Service)

  4. Another additional series of categories are formed like: Integration, Information, Management, Storage, Database, Application, Process, Testing, Security-as-a-service.

Each of these require an elaborate discussion and will be described in future articles.

Some of the advantages of Cloud computing –

A big paradigm shift of technology and use of applications and services is just because of this cloud concept. It changes the way traditional firms, ventures think about business and technology. Six basic reasons why cloud computing technology is getting used by so many firms and why organizations are revolving around its services:

  1. Cost: It reduces and minimizes the resources expense to buy hardware and software as well as set-up and running cost on-site.

  2. Speed: Majority of the cloud computing services offer the concept of self services with on demand facility, which becomes additional advantage to cloud users; just with a little browsing and mouse-clicking, gives commerce and firms lot more litheness.

  3. Productivity: Organizations and firms having their own data centers and on-site storage and services has the hectic of space and maintenance hardware in racks —set up of different components, patching of applications on a time-to time basis based on checks and other management issues related to Information Technology. All these things gets reduced as cloud computing has introduced to the corporate world bringing things simpler yet remote allowing them to focus more on their business and care less about the infrastructure setup and maintenance.

  4. Global scale: Delivering the proper amount of resources to a large scale across geographical location and with efficiency is one of the prime features of cloud computing.

  5. Performance: Cloud computing services are entitled to provide a high accuracy in performance. Users from across the globe are relying on the services provided by cloud computing service providers and their cloud architecture. These data-centers are secure, robust and powerful to handle different queries and responses.

  6. Reliability: Data backup for all cloud customers, disaster management and recovery are another primary feature cloud provides. This is possible because of its distributed architecture allowing data to be mirrored and reside at various redundant locations (servers)
